Xiaomi Poco C40: An Affordable Budget Smartphone Option in Pakistan

Xiaomi’s sub-brand Poco officially announced the Poco C40 in June 2022 as a new entry-level smartphone aimed at budget-conscious consumers. While the Poco C40 lacks flagship-level specifications, it provides decent specs at an affordable price point that makes it appealing for the Pakistani market.

The Poco C40 has a 6.71-inch IPS LCD screen with HD+ resolution of 720 x 1650 pixels. Though not Full HD, the large screen estate combined with a high screen-to-body ratio of around 82% gives an immersive viewing experience. The 400-nit maximum brightness ensures decent outdoor visibility as well. Protection is provided by Corning Gorilla Glass, adding some scratch resistance.

Under the hood, the Poco C40 is powered by the JLQ JR510 chipset, which is an entry-level 12nm octa-core processor with four Cortex-A55 cores clocked up to 2GHz and four cores up to 1.5GHz. Graphics are handled by the Mali-G57 GPU. While not a powerhouse by any means, the chipset provides enough grunt for basic day-to-day tasks and light gaming.

Poco offers the C40 in three memory/storage variants – 3GB/32GB, 4GB/32GB, and 4GB/64GB. Expandable storage of up to 1TB is supported through the microSD card slot. This tiered configuration gives users flexibility to choose the right model for their needs and budget. Multitasking and app performance should be decent on the higher-specced variants.

In terms of optics, the Poco C40 packs a dual rear camera array consisting of a 13MP primary sensor and 2MP depth sensor. On the front, a 5MP camera takes care of selfies and video calls. Camera quality is average at best in this price range, but the addition of features like HDR, panorama, and portrait mode add functionality. Video recording maxes out at 1080p30.

Connectivity options on the Poco C40 include dual 4G VoLTE support, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, Bluetooth 5, GPS, GLONASS and more. An important inclusion is an IR blaster, allowing the phone to control home appliances and act as a universal remote as well. Other features of note are a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, FM radio, 3.5mm headphone jack and USB-C port.

Keeping the lights on is a sizable 6000mAh battery which Poco claims can deliver up to two days of usage on a single charge. 18W fast charging support helps top up the cell quickly when running low. Overall battery life should be strong even with moderate to heavy usage.

On the software side, the Poco C40 boots Android 11 with POCO’s MIUI 13 skin on top. This provides a familiar interface and feature-set that Poco users are accustomed to. The phone also has Poco’s Launcher pre-installed for a clean, customizable home screen experience. MIUI 13 brings various optimizations and enhancements over previous versions as well.

In Pakistan, the Poco C40 is available starting at PKR 28,999 for the 3GB/32GB model. The 4GB/64GB variant retails for PKR 30,499. Given its large screen, 6000mAh battery, decent performance, and value-added features, the Poco C40 certainly delivers a lot of bang for your buck. It competes favorably against the likes of Infinix Hot 12 Play, Tecno Spark 8T, and Realme C30 at a similar price point.

Some noteworthy drawbacks are the average camera and display quality. Storage is also limited to 64GB maximum without further expansion. But for basic day-to-day needs on a tight budget, the Poco C40 ticks all the right boxes. Its combination of features and aggressive Pakistani pricing make it an attractive buy for those seeking an affordable no-frills smartphone.

With an increasing focus on catering to the entry-level and mass markets, Poco is well-positioned to find success in Pakistan through devices like the Poco C40. Time will tell if future iterations can improve on certain aspects to better compete at this stratum. For now, this is one of the best offerings available under PKR 28,000 for vanilla smartphone users in the country.
